Smartphones in FILM240X Fall 2011

From the exit surveys, some data about what kind of smartphones, if any, students in FILM240X are using this term. BlackBerry wins by a landslide.

New Course: Digital Media Trends

Did you enjoy FILM240? You might like FILM260…

Introducing a new course on digital media trends, cultures and theories at Queen’s University. This summer I’ll be offering a 6-week fully online course called FILM260. There are no formal course pre-reqs to take this course, which means that part time and lifelong learners are welcome. This credit course may also be transferred to other universities and colleges, contributing toward degree requirements — upon approval by home institution, of course.

More information and course outline coming in December (as soon as I finish grading and admin for FILM240!)

There is a 300 seat limit for this class. In Summer 2011 my digital culture e-course (FILM315) filled 200 seats in a week, so if you’re interested in FILM260, prepare to register ASAP.

Would you like a reminder when registration opens? Request one here.

Social Media Participation Points

Ten points of students’ final grades is connected to documented online peer-to-peer participation on designated branded FILM240X channels: Facebook, Twitter, and Moodle discussion forums.

Between 15 September and 1 December every student is expected to contribute a minimum of 5 value-added comments to the Moodle discussion forums, and to do one or a combination of the following:

(1) add a minimum of 5 interesting, topical links to FILM240X Facebook wall or
(2) contribute a minimum of 5 comments to FILM240X Facebook discussion threads (before October 31) or
(3) share a minimum of 5 interesting, topical links via the #FILM240X Twitter hashtag or
(4) if you do not use Twitter or Facebook, add a minimum of 5 more comments to Moodle discussion forums.

Pick your channel and preferred mode of participating, then document your activity on the Self-Assessment form and answer a series of questions regarding your personal progress, performance, and overall experience in the course. Forms are assessed based on accuracy, completeness, writing mechanics, and level of self-reflection.

Deadline for this assignment is 23:00 EST Dec 1st.
